Is Subaru symmetrical all-wheel drive really better than competitive AWD systems?
Subaru's system is a full-time mechanical AWD with a continuously engaged centre differential (or viscous coupling, depending on transmission), distributing torque 50/50 or 45/55 front/rear at default. Most competitor AWD systems (Toyota, Honda, Mazda) are on-demand FWD-based systems that transfer torque rearward only when slip is detected. In real deep-snow Canadian conditions — Gaspé, Northern Ontario, BC interior — Subaru's always-engaged architecture delivers measurably better traction initiation. For pavement and light snow, the difference is less meaningful.
