The third-generation M4 arrived for 2021 as a comprehensive performance engineering statement — the S58 3.0-litre twin-turbo inline-six produces 473 horsepower in the Competition trim and 503 horsepower in the Competition xDrive version. The standard M4 at 473 horsepower pairs with a six-speed manual or eight-speed M Steptronic automatic in rear-wheel drive; the Competition xDrive adds AWD with a rear-biased torque bias. The S58's power delivery is broader and more linear than the previous S55 — useful torque from 2,650 rpm without waiting for the turbochargers to build. The controversial grille styling carries over from the 4 Series, though in M4 context the wide body and carbon fibre roof partially reframe the aesthetic. M Drive Professional mode management allows independent suspension, differential, and drivetrain configuration.
