Do Lexus hybrids hold up through Canadian winters?
Lexus hybrids use the Toyota HSD (Hybrid Synergy Drive) system with either a nickel-metal-hydride or lithium-ion pack depending on the year. In deep cold (below -20°C), EV-only range shrinks to a few kilometres, but the combustion engine takes over seamlessly. Resistance heating draws from the hybrid battery, raising fuel consumption by 25–35% in winter. The upside: Lexus HSD battery durability is exceptional — RX 400h and RX 450h units from 2006–2012 are still running original packs past 300,000 km, a track record no European rival can match.
