Ford Ranger 2021

The fourth-generation Ranger returned to Canada in 2019, and the 2021 version continues on the T6 platform with a 2.3L EcoBoost four-cylinder producing 270 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque through a ten-speed SelectShift automatic. Available with rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, the Ranger's electronic shift-on-the-fly system allows 4H engagement at speeds up to 90 km/h. Towing is rated at 2,812 kg with properly equipped trims. The FX4 Off-Road package adds an electronic locking rear differential, terrain management modes (sand, grass/gravel/snow, rock crawl, mud/ruts), hill descent control, and off-road tuned Bilstein shocks. SYNC 3 infotainment with an 8-inch touchscreen is standard from XLT. The Ranger's 1,370 mm box on SuperCrew body (the volume seller in Canada) limits bed utility for longer loads; the SuperCab 1,637 mm box is available but reduces rear passenger space.

Questions fréquentes

01

Is the 2021 Ranger's 2.3L EcoBoost engine reliable enough for heavy-duty use in Canadian work environments?

The 2021 Ranger's 2.3L EcoBoost is generally reliable when properly maintained, but some Canadian owners have reported slightly elevated oil consumption between changes under heavy use. Ford specifies full-synthetic 5W-30 oil changes every 8,000 km or 6 months under severe-duty conditions — defined as dusty terrain, frequent towing, or repeated cold starts below -10°C. The engine uses a timing chain (not a belt), eliminating the costly periodic replacement that many competitors require. The turbocharger is the component most susceptible to early wear from rapid shut-downs after hard use — letting the engine idle for 60 seconds before a prolonged hot shut-off meaningfully extends turbo life in Canadian worktruck applications.

02

What is the towing capacity of the 2021 Ranger, and which configuration maximizes it?

The 2021 Ranger equipped with the factory tow package is rated for 2,812 kg (6,200 lb) in 4x2 configuration and 2,721 kg (6,000 lb) in 4x4. To achieve these numbers, the tow package — including the Class IV trailer hitch, 7-pin wiring, and upgraded transmission cooler — must be factory-ordered or dealer-installed. Without the package, capacity drops to approximately 900 kg. The rated capacity comfortably handles most fishing boats and light motorized watercraft common across Atlantic Canada, Ontario cottage country, and the BC interior. For travel trailers above 2,500 kg, a F-150 would be more appropriate. Always confirm the tow certification plate is present in the engine bay of any used 2021 Ranger before purchase.

03

How well does the 2021 Ranger handle northern Canadian bush roads and forestry tracks?

The 2021 Ranger FX4 Off-Road package is the best configuration for northern Canadian bush use: electronic rear locking differential, factory Bilstein shocks, steel skid plates, and a Slippery mode for icy surfaces. The 218 mm ground clearance handles most maintained forestry roads in Quebec and Ontario. In technical rocky terrain or deep stream crossings, the Ranger 2021 shows its limitations compared to a Tacoma TRD Pro or Colorado ZR2 — its approach and departure angles are less favourable. For light forestry operations, northern construction site access, and oil patch roads in Alberta, it remains a practical and well-suited tool that offers better on-road refinement than its body-on-frame rivals.
