Toyota Tundra 2022

Toyota's third-generation Tundra arrives for 2022 as a ground-up redesign, replacing the aged 5.7L V8 with the twin-turbocharged 3.5L i-Force V6 producing 389 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 10-speed automatic. For the first time, a hybrid powertrain is offered: the i-Force MAX system adds an electric motor integrated into the transmission housing, boosting combined output to 437 hp and 583 lb-ft while maintaining the same 10-speed automatic. Maximum tow capacity reaches 14,000 lbs (6,350 kg) with the Max Tow package — the highest in the segment at launch. The coil-spring rear suspension replaces the prior leaf spring setup, improving unladen ride quality substantially while maintaining competitive payload ratings. The interior shifts to a modern layout with a standard 8-inch or available 14-inch touchscreen. Canadian trims run SR, SR5, Limited, Platinum, Capstone, and the off-road-oriented TRD Pro with Fox live valve shocks.

Questions fréquentes

01

What engines and trims are available on the 2022 Tundra in Canada?

The 2022 Tundra was completely redesigned and replaces its legendary V8 with two new powertrains: a twin-turbocharged 3.5L V6 producing 389 hp paired with a 10-speed automatic, and the iForce Max hybrid variant pairing the same twin-turbo 3.5L with an integrated electric motor for 437 combined hp. Available trims in Canada are SR, SR5, Limited, Platinum, 1794 Edition, TRD Pro, and Capstone, with prices ranging from approximately $53,000 (SR 4x2) to over $92,000 (Capstone iForce Max). Maximum towing capacity is 14,000 lb (6,350 kg) with the appropriate tow package, and maximum payload is 2,145 lb (973 kg). The Tundra is one of the few full-size pickups offering an integrated hybrid system.

02

Is the all-new 2022 Tundra reliable, and how does it compare to the previous V8 generation?

The 2022 Tundra represents a major departure from the beloved previous-generation V8. Early Canadian owners reported some teething issues on first-production units -- notably shift quality concerns with the 10-speed automatic and occasional electronic comfort module failures. Toyota issued several software updates to address these points, and later 2022 production units are generally better sorted. Mechanically, the twin-turbo V6 has proven robust and capable. Real-world fuel consumption in mixed Canadian driving is approximately 14 to 16 L/100 km -- slightly above official figures in winter conditions. The iForce Max Hybrid reduces consumption by approximately 10 to 15 percent depending on conditions. The base warranty remains 3 years or 60,000 km, with 5 years or 100,000 km for the powertrain.

03

Is the 2022 Tundra iForce Max Hybrid worth the price premium in Canada?

The 2022 Tundra iForce Max Hybrid adds approximately $3,500 to $4,000 over the equivalent twin-turbo V6 trim. In return, you get 437 hp vs 389 hp, 583 lb-ft of torque vs 479 lb-ft, and fuel savings of approximately 1.5 to 2 L/100 km in mixed use -- representing roughly $350 to $500 in annual fuel savings for a Canadian owner driving 20,000 km per year. The pure fuel-economy payback is therefore 7 to 11 years. However, the iForce Max also delivers noticeably better low-rpm torque response -- extremely useful when towing. For Canadians who regularly tow trailers or use the Tundra for heavy work, the iForce Max offers a compelling case beyond the fuel savings alone.
