The X5 with the B58 inline-six (xDrive40i) is generally considered the most dependable powertrain in the lineup. Earlier V8 versions (N63/S63) had well-documented oil consumption issues; units from 2015 onward received a partial engineering revision, but an oil level inspection before purchase remains essential. The G05 generation (2019+) simplified electronic systems and improved overall reliability compared to the F15 predecessor.
The X5 xDrive40i is rated to tow up to 3,500 kg with the factory towing package, covering most lightweight travel trailers and 20-foot boats. The B58 produces 540 Nm of torque from 1,500 rpm, delivering smooth passing power on grades. The available air suspension automatically lowers the vehicle when a trailer is connected. For regular towing beyond 3,000 kg, the M50i with the V8 is the correct powertrain choice.
Annual maintenance on an X5 runs between $2,200 and $4,500 at a dealership, or $1,500 to $3,000 at an independent shop specialising in German vehicles. Brakes — oversized but worn quickly in sport driving — are often the largest cost line, at $800 to $1,400 for a complete front and rear replacement. Servicing the ZF 8HP automatic transmission fluid every 60,000 km is strongly advised and costs approximately $350.
The X5 retains roughly 44 to 50 percent of its residual value after five years, depending on trim and overall condition. The xDrive40i in M Sport trim retains meaningfully more value than base sDrive40i versions. English-Canadian markets favour lighter interior colours like Cognac or Mocha, while Quebec buyers often preference Ivory White, affecting regional pricing. A sub-80,000 km odometer reading combined with an accident-free CARFAX report can mean a $3,000 to $6,000 premium at resale.
The X5 leads on driving dynamics, the more responsive xDrive all-wheel-drive system and the proven reliability of the inline-six B58 engine. The Mercedes GLE offers standard air suspension on more trims and an optional third row for seven passengers. If family versatility is the priority — ski equipment transport, boat towing, long highway runs — the GLE with the seven-seat package is difficult to match. For drivers who prioritise road feel and driving engagement, the X5 remains the segment benchmark.
