Is the 10-speed SelectShift automatic transmission in the 2022 F-150 reliable for heavy-duty work use long term?
The 10-speed automatic (10R80) in the 2022 F-150 was criticized at its introduction on the 2017 F-150 for cold-start shift clunks. By the 2022 model year, Ford had deployed multiple electronic management updates that substantially improved shift behaviour. For intensive work use (regular towing, heavy payloads), Ford technicians recommend draining and refilling the transmission fluid every 80,000 km in severe-duty service (versus the 160,000 km interval listed for normal use) — a precaution often skipped but one that meaningfully extends transmission life. Under normal work-duty driving, the 10R80 in the 2022 shows very few documented failures under 200,000 km with regular maintenance. The key is defining "severe duty" honestly: any regular towing over 5,000 lb or sustained trailer loads qualifies.
