Model & Year Overview

Mazda CX-50 2023

The 2023 Mazda CX-50 is the first model year of an all-new compact SUV built at the Mazda-Toyota Manufacturing plant in Huntsville, Alabama — making it CUSMA-compliant and eligible for full Canadian iZEV program pricing considerations. It replaces the CX-5 in Mazda's lineup with a larger footprint and increased ground clearance (up 10 mm versus CX-5), wider track, and more aggressive exterior styling. The powertrain options are the Skyactiv-G 2.5L naturally aspirated four-cylinder at 187 hp and the Skyactiv-G 2.5T turbocharged at 256 hp, both with i-Activ AWD and a 6-speed automatic. A 2.5L hybrid version (Turbo Hybrid) arrives mid-year. Interior quality is a step above the CX-5 with standard leather on GS-L and above and a 10.25-inch centre display on all trims. The CX-50 has a longer wheelbase than the CX-5, providing more rear seat space. Fuel consumption with the turbo engine is approximately 10.0 L/100 km combined.

Frequently Asked Questions

01

What sets the 2023 Mazda CX-50 apart from other Mazda SUVs in Canada?

The 2023 Mazda CX-50 is a recent addition to the Mazda lineup in Canada, positioned above the CX-5 in terms of character and off-road capability while sharing the same platform. The CX-50 distinguishes itself with a more rugged styling featuring 213 mm of ground clearance, flared wheel arches and an off-road driving mode with hill descent control. It is exclusively offered with standard i-Activ AWD. Canadian trims range from the GX (approximately $31,900) to the Turbo Premium Plus (approximately $48,500). The base engine is the Skyactiv-G 2.5L producing 187 hp; the Turbo version receives the 2.5L Turbo producing 256 hp. The cabin accommodates five passengers with an 793-litre cargo area, larger than the CX-5. For Canadian outdoor enthusiasts who want a more adventure-oriented vehicle than the standard CX-5 while retaining Mazda refinement, the CX-50 is a credible alternative.

02

Is the 2023 Mazda CX-50 Turbo a good buy in Canada versus its competitors?

The 2023 Mazda CX-50 Turbo is a very competitive purchase in Canada within the premium compact SUV segment. At approximately $43,000 to $48,500 depending on the Turbo trim chosen, it competes with the Subaru Forester Sport, Honda CR-V Sport and Ford Escape ST. Its 2.5L Turbo producing 256 hp (with 93-octane premium fuel) delivers solid performance with an estimated 0-100 km/h of approximately 6.2 seconds. Fuel consumption for the Turbo version sits around 10 to 11L/100 km in combined driving — reasonable for this level of performance. Interior finish quality is considered superior to Japanese and Korean competitors at comparable prices: the materials, textures and ergonomics approach the premium German segment. Residual values for the CX-50 depreciate faster than a Toyota RAV4 or Honda CR-V, which is a consideration when calculating total 5-year ownership costs. That said, for buyers who prioritize the driving experience and styling, the CX-50 Turbo delivers an exceptional value-to-driving-enjoyment ratio in Canada.

03

Is the 2023 Mazda CX-50 suited for off-road use in Canada?

The 2023 Mazda CX-50 is designed for mixed on-road and light off-road use, not extreme trail driving. Its 213 mm of ground clearance, standard AWD and specific driving modes (including an Off-Road mode that maintains four-wheel traction longer, plus hill descent control) make it capable on gravel roads, well-maintained forest trails and snowy or muddy roads typical of Canadian outdoor adventures. The Off-Road system can handle cottage-country terrain and forest service roads across Quebec, Ontario and the western provinces. However, the CX-50 lacks a locking rear differential, a low-range transfer case and its ground clearance remains less than that of a Jeep Compass or Subaru Outback in adventure configuration. For hunting, fishing and camping trips across Canada on forest service roads, the CX-50 is perfectly adequate. For more serious expeditions in remote areas of British Columbia or the Yukon, a vehicle with more substantial 4x4 capability would be preferable.
