Does the 2026 MX-5 finally receive a power increase to answer critics of its 181 hp engine?
Mazda has raised the Skyactiv-G 2.0L output to 190 hp on the 2026 MX-5 (up from 181 hp since 2019) through revised cylinder head porting and intake system changes, without compromising the roadster's characteristic light weight (still under 1,000 kg depending on trim). This modest but welcome gain improves the 5,500 to 7,500 rpm operating range most relevant to the MX-5's driving character. The 0-100 km/h time drops to approximately 6.1 seconds in Sport manual form, versus 6.5 seconds on the 2025. Mazda has also recalibrated the electric power steering for improved road feedback on winding roads — a meaningful update for Quebec's Eastern Townships and Charlevoix region, two favourite MX-5 driving grounds among Canadian owners.
