Is the BMW X1 xDrive adequate for navigating severe winters in northern Ontario?
The X1 xDrive28i uses a hang-on AWD setup that primarily drives the front wheels and engages the rear axle on demand — less sophisticated than the permanent xDrive in the X3 or 3 Series. In everyday winter conditions with proper winter tires, it handles northern Ontario and Laurentian roads with confidence. Its limits show in deep snow off-road or on unmaintained forest tracks, where a Subaru Outback or a higher-clearance SUV is more capable. For paved winter roads, shopping centres with unsalted lots, and the occasional unpaved ski resort approach, the X1 xDrive performs reliably. Winter tires are non-negotiable for the best results.
